In the 1980′s Nintendo did a remarkable thing. They brought the technology and advancements of computers into the minds and hands of families all around the world.
Previous to Nintendo’s home gaming systems, only a select few die hard video gamers played in the comfort of their houses or apartments. The electronic game industry was evolving from pinball games into electronic screens and joysticks found in arcades and amusement parks everywhere, but it was Nintendo that brought video games home.
Now known simply as NES (Nintendo Entertainment System), in those early days Nintendo 64 or just plain Nintendo, described the joystick controller, gaming box and cartridges being used around the world. Games like Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, Tetris and Super Mario Brothers were among the first to turn everyone from preschoolers to car pool mothers into video gaming addicts.
Nintendo arrived in households at a time when computers were only used at the office, and nobody outside tech circles knew what the internet was. Nintendo systems brought the high end graphics of arcade games and coupled them with keyboards and programs that could be hooked up to the family television set. A simple switch allowed the family tv to become the family arcade and many hours were spent in friendly competitions.
In 1989, Nintendo brought to market the classic Gameboy; a small sized, portable gaming device. The popularity of the Gameboy has not wavered, and over 150 million units have been sold all over the world. Other gaming systems similarly brought out smaller versions, but it was the Gameboy from Nintendo that first turned those giant consoles of the arcades into pocket-sized fun that traveled anywhere and everywhere.
The modern era of cell phones and tablets might make it difficult to imagine a life without a game break. While Nintendo may not have brought these latter products to the fold, we have them to thank for creating a consumer demand for portable, easy to use, entertainment that led others to follow.
